Guildford to Dorking

Not The North Downs Way

I have walked at least 4 different routes from Guildford to Dorking, this is probably my favourite. Compared to the North Downs Way (which tends to be tree lined), this offers good views and a few pub stops. A direct rail link between Guildford and Dorking Deepdene makes this route readily accessible, a stopping service (Dorking Deepdene – Dorking West – Gomshall – Chilworth – Shalford – Guilford) also runs, BUT do check times.

My advice is not to treat this as a route march, but rather take your time and enjoy it!

This enjoyable 4.3 mile walk trough the Surrey Hills, can be accessed by bus route 32, which runs between Guildford and Redhill (via Dorking). Therefore this very pleasant 2hr stroll is readily available to those who don’t wish to drive. I strongly recommend the Stephan Langton for lunch, both it’s food (home cooked) and beer (Tillingbourne Ales) are excellent. The Waterfall is on private land and the locals are very protective, however it can be viewed from a public foot path.

This 9 mile circular from Guildford Town centre can easily be halved by using Shalford as the turning point. For those who enjoy a pint the shortened route can become a pub crawl as follows:-

1. White House, Guildford
2. Weyside Guildford
3. Seahorse Shalford
4. Queen Vic Shalford – short diversion required
5. The Parrot Shalford
6. Ye Olde Ship, Artington – short diversion required
7. The Britannia, Guildford
8. Keystone, Guildford
9. The George Abbott, Guildford

Enjoy!

I have walked this 13 mile circular route at least once a year, for the past 20 yrs and still enjoy it. As written it starts and finishes in Guildford, as it’s well served by public transport (and is my home town). Guildford parking is expensive and can be difficult to find, therefore I suggest to anyone driving that they use the free car park located on halfpenny lane (nr St Martha’s Hill) and complete the circuit from there. A look at a map shows the walk can easily be shortened or lengthened to your preference.
